Choosing your first table tennis racket may seem easy… until you see how many options are available in sports stores. Different speeds, spin levels, rubber hardness, and grip types can make it confusing.
That’s why I prepared a simple guide that will help you choose a racket that matches your playing style and skill level.
1. Ready-made racket or custom racket?
You have two options:
Type | For whom? | Advantages |
Ready-made racket (bought as one product) | Beginners and recreational players | Good price, nothing to assemble, easy to buy |
Custom racket (blade and rubbers selected separately) | Intermediate and advanced players | Better match to playing style, clearly higher quality |
➡️ If you are just starting — choose a ready-made racket.
➡️ If you train regularly — consider a custom racket.
2. What to look at when choosing?
🔹 Grip type
The most comfortable grip for most players is FL – flared, which fits well in the hand.
Other common grips: ST (straight) and AN (anatomic).
🔹 Parameters on the packaging
Manufacturers usually use a scale (e.g., 1–10):
- Speed – affects power
- Spin – affects how much spin you can generate
- Control – makes the game more stable and accurate
👉 For beginners: choose a racket with high control and medium speed.
3. How much should your first racket cost?
- 60–120 PLN – for recreational players
- 150–300 PLN – for players who train regularly
- 300+ PLN – professional, custom rackets
Recommended beginner models:
- Donic Waldner 400–600
- Butterfly Addoy
- Tibhar 3000 / 4000
- Stiga 2 / 4 / 5 Stars
⚠️ Important: Do not buy the cheapest rackets from supermarkets.
They may look similar, but they don’t teach proper technique.
Summary
The best racket is the one that gives you control of the ball.
Speed and spin will come later — start with stability.
